How to combat Maskne

A new term has been coined during this pandemic - Maskne! This refers to skin irritation and breakouts caused by frequent mask wearing. Our face masks are certainly helping to prevent spread of covid, but they are also doing a number to your skin!  It’s caused by both the friction of the mask rubbing against your skin, and also the sweat, oil, and makeup that builds up underneath the mask.  To prevent this, follow these tips:

  1. Apply an oil-free, non-greasy moisturizer throughout the day along your nose, cheeks, and anywhere else the mask will rest. This will decrease the amount of friction between the mask and your skin

  2. if you’re not a healthcare worker on the job, choose a breathable, natural fabric for your mask, such as cotton or silk. Make sure to wash it regularly with a gentle detergent.

  3. Avoid wearing makeup underneath the mask as this will clog pores. When you get home, wash your face when you take off the mask with a gentle soap.

Mask-wearing has been proven to be an effective tool to prevent spread of coronavirus, thank you for doing your part!

Stay safe friends!
