What is Kybella?

Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment for reducing submental fat—the stubborn fat beneath the chin commonly called a "double chin." Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the submental area, it destroys fat cell membranes, causing them to break down and be gradually eliminated by the body.

Because the fat cells are permanently destroyed, results do not reverse with weight maintenance. Once the desired contour is achieved, further treatment is not expected.

How Kybella Works

Dr. Kieu maps a precise grid beneath the chin and administers a series of small injections at specifically targeted depths. The deoxycholic acid disrupts the fat cell membranes in the treated area, causing cell death. Over the following 4–6 weeks, the body's natural processes clear the destroyed fat cells, gradually revealing a more contoured jaw and neck profile.

Most patients require 2–4 treatment sessions spaced at least 4–6 weeks apart, depending on the amount of submental fat present and the desired degree of reduction.

What to Expect After Treatment

Swelling under the chin is expected and is actually a sign the treatment is working. It typically peaks around day 2–3 and resolves within 5–7 days. Some patients experience temporary numbness, firmness, or mild bruising in the area. These effects are transient and resolve on their own.

Kybella vs. Submental Liposuction

Kybella

Non-surgical. No incisions. Gradual results over multiple sessions. Higher total cost for equivalent result. Best for mild-to-moderate submental fat. More downtime per session due to swelling.

Submental Liposuction

Surgical (minor). Single session with immediate, more dramatic fat reduction. Typically more cost-effective for significant fat. Brief recovery of about 1 week. Preferred for moderate-to-significant fat volume.

Dr. Kieu will discuss both options and help you determine which is the better match for your anatomy, goals, and lifestyle.

Skin laxity consideration: Kybella reduces fat but does not tighten skin. Patients with significant skin laxity beneath the chin may not achieve optimal results with Kybella alone and may be better served by a surgical approach. Dr. Kieu evaluates skin quality during consultation to guide this recommendation.
